A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusivity
From its very beginning, Iowa State University was built on revolutionary ideas. It was one of the first colleges to embrace the land-grant mission, which holds that a quality education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or gender. The university also broke new ground by teaching practical subjects like agriculture and engineering alongside traditional classical studies. This pioneering spirit is still alive today, with Iowa State leading the way in research and technology. In fact, inventions like the first binary computer were born right here on campus. A Community That Helps You Thrive
College is about more than just classes. It is also about finding your people and building a support system. Iowa State University excels at helping students feel connected. For example, more than 94% of first-year students join a “learning community,” which is a small group of students in the same major who take classes together and participate in activities. This makes a big university feel much smaller and helps you make friends and build connections with faculty quickly. One student shared that this community gave her “a sense of belonging” when she came to campus knowing no one. With nearly 80 different learning communities to choose from, it is easy to find one that fits your interests.
An Unforgettable Campus Experience
Life outside the classroom is just as vibrant. Iowa State University has a beautiful campus with beloved traditions that bring students together. For example, the iconic Campanile is at the center of a famous tradition where you officially become an Iowa Stater when kissed under it at midnight. The Memorial Union is the “living room of campus,” a central spot for students to study, eat, bowl in CyBowl, or see a live show in the Maintenance Shop. The campus also features Lake LaVerne, where a pair of swans named Lancelot and Elaine have lived since 1935. These unique experiences help create a strong sense of pride and community among students, faculty, and alumni.
Iowa State University is more than just a place to earn a degree; it is a community where you can grow, explore, and build a strong foundation for your future. Iowa State University is ready for you to write the next chapter of its story.
